Daimler AG: Ambition2039: Our path to sustainable mobility

“First Move the World” – that’s our purpose at Mercedes-Benz Cars. That’s the deeper meaning of our work, what drives us, our “why”. “First Move the World” means going for more than just immediate objectives. This inner unrest for what’s next is part of our company’s DNA. Therefore, it’s also a cornerstone of the new sustainable business strategy we are currently working on.
Although this strategy has several dimensions, one of the defining issues is how we address our CO2 footprint. At Mercedes-Benz we strive for the best and our customers expect us to deliver sustainable and fascinating mobility. So, one of the key questions we are addressing is this: What are we doing to make sure our customers can switch to carbon neutral mobility in the future? The answer is our “Ambition2039”:

Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined electric energy consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km*)

We aim to have a carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet in 20 years

Let’s be clear what this means for us: a fundamental transformation of our company within less than three product cycles. That’s not much time when you consider that fossil fuels have dominated our business since the invention of the car by Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler some 130 years ago. But as a company founded by engineers, we believe technology can also help to engineer a better future. Our way to sustainable mobility is innovation – in a holistic approach along the entire value chain.

Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined electric energy consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km*)

We want to offer our customers a carbon-neutral driving experience

Today in Oslo, at the press test drive of our Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined electric energy consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km*), we are introducing the first of an entire generation of electric Mercedes models. By 2030 we aim to have electric models make up more than half of our car sales – that includes all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids. We will continue to offer our customers performance and luxury from Mercedes.
At the same time we want to significantly reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle. Our R&D team is working together with established partners and startups alike to bring EV performance up and costs down. Our approach also includes the continuous development of our mobility services, to spread the use of electric models.
In addition to cars, we’re also electrifying our vans, trucks and buses. And the modular development enables the rapid transfer of technology between our divisions. Our current focus is on battery-electric mobility. But there’s also room and need to continue to work on other solutions, for example, the fuel cell or eFuels. Our GLC F-CELL (combined hydrogen consumption: 0.34 kg/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km, combined power consumption: 13.7 kWh/100 km**) is one proof point.
This technology will also find use in our city buses. Today, no one knows for sure which drivetrain mix will best serve our customers’ needs 20 years from now. That’s why we encourage policy makers to pave the way for tech neutrality: Let’s fix the target, but not the means to achieve it.

We strive for carbon-neutral production

Our Factory 56 is the blueprint: This new addition to our Sindelfingen plant uses renewable energy and will be CO2-neutral from the start. Next, all of our European plants will follow by 2022. Our new production site in Jawor, Poland, shows how sustainability and cost efficiency go together: Not only does wind power make production greener, it also makes it more economical at this site than possible with conventional power.
Electricity from renewable sources will also be used for production of the EQC at our plant in Bremen and our battery production in Kamenz, Saxony. A holistic view on carbon cutting also includes the recycling of raw materials. Mercedes cars have a potential recycling ratio of 85 percent. So, we are moving from a value chain to a value cycle.

We will drive our supply chain to follow our ambition

Driving our suppliers and partners to comply with our objective of carbon neutrality is important to us. The starting point is in creating transparency. To this end we are working with organizations like CDP to assess the environmental impact of our supply chain. Next, we are currently conducting workshops with suppliers to identify effective CO2 reduction measures. Our goal is to establish CO2 targets as one key criteria in making supplier decisions and contracts across all major commodities.

We inspire our customers for carbon-neutral mobility and enable access to emission free driving

Electricity in the life cycle of an electric car is – in some regions – a very significant source of CO2 depending on how it’s generated. We want to inspire our customers to charge their green vehicles with green energy. With Mercedes Me Charge, for example, we enable drivers to conveniently charge their cars at various public charging stations in Europe, wherever possible with energy from renewable sources.
But the transformation to a sustainable mobility of the future will only succeed if the auto industry, energy suppliers and policy makers are working hand in hand. It requires massive investments and tangible action also beyond the auto sector. Carbon-neutral energy and a comprehensive infrastructure are indispensable for this system change. And we are open to a discussion on effective CO2 pricing as well as incentives for low/ no carbon technology – preferably on a global scale.

Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined electric energy consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km*)

We mean it

To us the Paris Agreement is more than an obligation – it’s our conviction. And we have set a clear course to help prevent further acceleration of climate change. However, this transformation is a huge challenge – technologically and financially. After all, we want to make sustainable mobility even more exciting, not more expensive. And of course this is also about sustainable business results. How do we deal with this? One way would be to shy away and just try to safeguard the status quo. But that would not serve our purpose – and certainly not our future. So, we prefer doing what our founders have done: they became system architects of a new mobility without horses. Today, our task is individual mobility without emissions.
And again, it takes technology and determination. To underline that we mean it, part of the compensation of our board of management is linked to the achievement of our sustainability goals – including our CO2 footprint. We’ll all have to get out of our comfort zones to find new ways to move forward. And we’re seeking close alignment with our workforce and their representatives on this path. This transformation is the task of our generation and I’m absolutely confident: we have the right team to deliver. This strategy will help us stay in a leading position in the auto industry.

*Electric energy consumption and range have been determined on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 692/2008. Electric energy consumption and range depend on the vehicle configuration.
** Figures for fuel consumption, electrical consumption and CO2 emissions are provisional and were determined by the technical service for the certification process in accordance with the WLTP test method, and correlated into NEDC figures. The EC type approval and a certificate of conformity with official figures are not yet available. Differences between the stated figures and the official figures are possible.

Google Travel é o novo player do turismo.

Six special-purpose vehicles
for fire services, emergency physicians and the police.
For many years now, the BMW Group has been one of the major exhibitors at the RETTmobil, and this year, with six different models on two and four wheels, will again provide a detailed insight into its diverse range of specialised vehicles. The selection of exhibition vehicles is led by the new 3 Series Sedan with a concealed special signalling system.

The BMW Group stand will also showcase a BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer (4.8 litres diesel per 100 kilometres; CO2 emissions 128 g/km*) and a BMW X3 (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 142 g/km*) as emergency medical vehicles and a BMW X1 (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 127 g/km*) as a fire command vehicle.

The fire-service version of the BMW F 750 GS (standard fuel consumption (WMTC) 4.1 l/100 km; maximum speed 190 km/h) exhibited by BMW Motorrad rounds off the BMW Group's emergency vehicle fleet. The BMW Group will also present the police version of the BMW i8 TUNE IT! SAFE! as a campaign vehicle on the outdoor area of RETTmobil.

Many years of experience and competence in the production of specialised vehicles.
The BMW Group has been active in the demanding segment of specialised vehicles since as early as the 1950s and is thus able to look back on a tradition lasting for more than 65 years now.

This is reflected not least in the extensive and diverse range of in-house developed and produced special-purpose vehicles. They are all characterised by innovative and tailor-made solutions and fulfil the highest demands in the areas of performance, functionality, safety and reliability.

Specialised vehicles from the BMW Group also convince in terms of efficiency, eco-friendliness and economy – particularly as they are based on series production models from the leading manufacturer of premium automobiles and motorcycles that, by tradition, play an exemplary role in this sector.

Further information on emergency vehicles is available on the Internet at www.bmw.de/de/topics/faszination-bmw/grosskunden-behoerden/behoerdenfahrzeuge.html and www.bmw-motorrad-authorities.com.

In keeping with the significance of the leading trade fair for emergency services and mobility, the BMW Group will be presenting at the RETTmobil 2019 a half a dozen specialised vehicles for various different task areas and purposes.

The six exhibits provide visitors with an informative overview of the extensive and diverse range of products offered by the brands BMW, BMW Motorrad and MINI.

For more than six decades now, the BMW Group has supported with an ever-increasing number of models and solutions specialists from fire services, accident assistance and technical support services as well as police forces with their demanding tasks and ever-increasing challenges in the areas of rescue, medical aid and safety.

Intelligent. Ahead of the curve.
The stealth version of the BMW 3 Series.
In vibrant “Melbourne red metallic”, this vehicle commands attention from afar. In addition to an independent special signalling system, with tone sequence and magnetic flashing light, the vehicle is also equipped with independent front flashers.

The driver and front passenger are accommodated in heated sports seats with lumbar support, which offer maximum comfort and support even on the toughest assignments.

To create the optimal working environment, the BMW 320d xDrive Sedan (average fuel consumption of just 4.8 - 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres*, CO2 emissions of between 125 - 119 grams per kilometre*) also features comfort and safety-enhancing details such as LED headlights, M leather steering wheel, Driving Assistant, Park Distance Control and the “Professional” business package.

A four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm is responsible for getting the vehicle to its deployment location quickly.

With an average fuel consumption of just 4.8 - 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres*, the self-ignition engine operates extremely efficiently, with CO2 emissions of between 125 - 119 grams per kilometre*.

Coupled with the Sport Automatic Steptronic transmission and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, it takes the BMW 320d xDrive Sedan to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 233 km/h.

Fast and highly visible:
the BMW X3 xDrive20d for emergency medics.
A BMW X3 xDrive20d with signal wrapping in RAL 3026 luminous bright red will also be on display at the BMW Group stand at RETTmobil 2019. The words “emergency medic” on the sides, rear and bonnet clearly indicate the intended use. In addition to the corresponding wrapping, the model presented at the BMW stand also has a special signalling system with yellow turn signals, additional front flashers and alley lights.

The special signalling system mounted on the roof rail, combined with two blue front and rear flashers, captures other road users’ attention whenever emergency medics are deployed. The vehicle also comes pre-installed for digital radio.

Emergency medics can rely on the “Professional” navigation system for the fastest route to their deployment. The four-cylinder turbodiesel with 140 kW/190 hp (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 142 g/km*) is very useful here.

Features such as automatic climate control, seat heating and lumbar support for both the driver and front passenger guarantee greater ride comfort.

Highly versatile:
BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer for emergency medics.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer impresses with its flexibility, spaciousness and range of practical details. Thanks to its raised seating position, large doors and heavy-duty load floor, the dynamic Sports Activity Tourer is perfect for conversion to an emergency medical vehicle.

The optical equipment is completed by blue flashers at the front and blue and yellow flashers at the rear, with additional yellow flashers in the boot lid.

In addition to a Sepura digital radio pre-installation and corresponding radio antenna, a 230-volt power socket and two DIN 12V sockets with continuous current, a permanently installed charger for the two vehicle batteries and a steel partition grid meet all the requirements of an emergency medical vehicle.

Modern assistance systems such as the navigation system, Park Distance Control and Head-Up Display provide the driver with the support they need in the field. The BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer also has a lot to offer in terms of driving dynamics.

Powered by a muscular four-cylinder turbodiesel with 140 kW/190 hp, it delivers a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Power is transmitted automatically via the eight-speed Steptronic – for a fuel consumption of only 4.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres* and CO2 emissions of 128 g/km* in this version.

The emergency vehicle sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds, with a maximum speed of 218 km/h. The vehicle also comes with intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive that delivers driving power safely to the road and can be relied on to make good progress off-road.

When speed is of the essence:
BMW X1 xDrive18d for operations command.
The typical qualities of the current BMW X1 include reliability, versatility, efficiency and dynamic performance. This makes the all-rounder highly suitable for a wide range of applications demanding an overall view, speed and manoeuvrability – for example, as command cars for the fire department.

Among the most visible features of the BMW X1 xDrive18d on display at RETTmobil 2019 are the eye-catching BMW-design wrapping in RAL 3000, the special signalling system and two blue LED flashers at both the front and rear.

A second battery that powers the specific components needed for the deployment and digital radio pre-installation with radio antenna meet the basic requirements for an emergency service command vehicle.

A powerful four-cylinder turbodiesel with 110 kW/150 hp and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 127g/km)* guarantees superior handling on both paved and unpaved roads.

i8 tune it! Safe! police vehicle.
The next level is here: The new campaign vehicle for the TUNE IT! SAFE! initiative for safe tuning is simply electrifying. An athletic front, striking gullwing doors and progressive lines make the BMW i8 Coupé an impressive automobile.

With extensive tuning components from AC Schnitzer, ultra-high-performance tyres from Hankook, a special signalling system from Hella and official wrapping from FOLIATEC.com, the TUNE IT! SAFE! campaign vehicle is most certainly a futuristic eye-catcher.

However, the most revolutionary detail lies on the inside. For the fourth consecutive year, the plug-in hybrid drive train in the BMW i8 2018 won its category in the world’s most important engine competition, the “International Engine of the Year Award”.

The high-performance electric motor with an output of 105 kW (143 hp) and the powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with 170 kW (231 hp) accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.

In this way, BMW combines extreme lightweight design and the passion of a sports car with the benefits of electromobility; AC Schnitzer then pairs this basis with trendsetting tuning measures.

Fast and agile: the BMW F 750 GS.
The BMW F 750 GS on show at RETTmobil 2019 impressively demonstrates the qualities needed by an official motorcycle.

In addition to its Munich plant’s fire brigade’s wrapping, the motorcycle’s optical equipment includes several flashing LED beacons and a rotating LED beacon, each of which can switch between blue and yellow lights.

The entire lighting system and tone sequencer are safely operated by compact, ergonomically optimised controls on the handlebar. The rider sits on a height-adjustable individual seat with a radio box.

All devices can be safely stowed inside the seat and are immediately at hand when required. Any other utensils needed on site – such as handheld fire extinguishers – can be kept in two generously-sized saddlebags with ample storage space. Other features include heated grips, hand protection and protective bars.

The “Rain” and “Road” driving modes allowed the motorcycle to adapt to different road conditions. In addition to the standard BMW Motorrad ABS and tilt-optimised ABS Pro with dynamic brake light, two additional driving programmes, “Dynamic” and “Enduro”, are also featured in the F 750 GS on display.

The bike is powered by a two-cylinder four-stroke inline engine with 853 cc, an output of 57 kW/77 hp and a maximum torque of 83 Nm. Standard fuel consumption (WMTC) is 4.1 l/100 km, with a top speed of 190 km/h.

CO2 emissions & consumptionFurther information on official fuel consumption figures and specific CO2 emission values of new passenger cars is included in the following guideline: “Leitfaden über Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen” (Guideline for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and electric power consumption of new passenger cars), which can be obtained free of charge from all dealerships and at https://www.dat.de/en/offers/publications/guideline-for-fuel-cons
